AC or heat pump

Cooling replacement is a useful time to compare heating options.

Start with the cooling project

An air conditioner moves heat out of the house. A heat pump uses a reversible refrigeration cycle, so it can cool the house and also move heat indoors during heating mode. Both choices still depend on an indoor coil or fan coil, suitable airflow, controls, electrical work, and an outdoor location.

Compare the same installation scope

A useful comparison holds the house conditions constant. Both proposals identify the outdoor and indoor models, controls, electrical work, refrigerant route, equipment removal, startup tests and operating instructions. This exposes scope differences that an outdoor-equipment price cannot show.

Decide what happens to gas heat

Choosing a heat pump does not by itself require removing a gas furnace. A dual-fuel design can retain gas heat. The furnace supplies the blower, the indoor coil exchanges heat with the air stream, and the controls coordinate electric and gas heating. The operating design still depends on the proposed equipment, house and climate.

Read the matching record

AHRI explains that its reference number or certificate identifies a certified outdoor-unit and indoor-unit combination. Request that record for the proposed cooling system, then confirm that the model numbers on the final paperwork match the installed equipment.
