Do not skip the indoor coil

The cooling system crosses the wall

The outdoor cabinet rejects heat, while refrigerant connects it to the indoor coil. The furnace or air-handler blower moves household air across that coil and into the supply ducts. A replacement decision therefore includes equipment that may be out of sight above or beside the furnace.

Get the complete model combination

The proposal names both the outdoor unit and indoor coil or fan coil. AHRI states that a reference number or certificate verifies the certified combination. Retaining an existing coil therefore needs model-specific compatibility; refrigerant and metering-device requirements also come from the selected equipment.

Follow the airflow

ENERGY STAR’s quality-installation guidance calls out equipment sizing, system airflow and duct evaluation. Weak registers and rooms that have been difficult to cool are evidence about distribution. Airflow can be measured at the indoor equipment and compared with manufacturer requirements; duct or blower corrections belong in the scope when the existing path cannot support the selected system.

Include condensate and service access

Cooling creates condensate at the indoor coil. Ask where the drain and any auxiliary protection will go, how the coil can be accessed later, and how filter replacement works after the new equipment is in place.
